Today, Thursday, I sent a Letter to the Editor of The Wichita Eagle in support of the proposed increase in the sales tax. I did not sign the letter as the Interim Pastor of PVCC, because I’m pretty sure we have members of the congregation with different points of view. In fact, normally I would not support an increased sales tax. It is a regressive tax that falls heaviest on those who can least afford it. I find the tax on food especially distasteful. But thanks to the leaders in Topeka who voted to eliminate a truly progressive income tax, the cost for maintaining basic services—a bus system, decent roads, a secure water supply—is falling more heavily on local communities. In my letter I said that I hope that that portion of the tax designated for jobs will be used for jobs that pay a living wage and have adequate benefits. In the coming weeks public hearings will be held on whether or not to increase the sales tax. I encourage you to let your voice be heard.
To encourage discussion the Seekers Class will adopt a new format for the summer. Participants are encouraged to bring a clipping from the newspaper that they would like to discuss. I hope to see you at the Seekers Class on Sunday.
Blessings,
David
