The first Camp Sunflower will be held starting July 20 through July 22 at the Disciple Center / Camp Tawakoni. At this time we still have space for a few more campers. For this first year we have set a limit at 24 campers beginning 9th through 12th grade. We have an experienced Director, seven experienced counselors that have worked with LGBTQ youth, and a full time camp nurse.
Our Steering Committee consists of Dave Roy, Liz Carson, Lisa Tos-Brightup, Pastor Kara and Cheryl Roy from PVCC; Paul Ellis Jackson from University Congregational Church; Jackie Carter from Table Of Hope; Liz Hamor from Wichita Chapter of GLSEN; Brad Thomison from WSU Office of Diversity and Inclusiveness as LGBTQ Coordinator; Will Rapp a GLSEN volunteer; Kathy Richstatter and Pat Bunton as volunteers. We lost two members from the team, Rev. Dr. David Hansen and Pastor Kent Little from College Hill UMC.
We are so excited about this upcoming event which has taken a year and seven months to develop. We are looking forward to getting feedback from the campers, counselors and committee to make next year’s camp much bigger.
Different groups and individuals in the community have reiterated that this type of camp is needed and Pine Valley can be proud of be part of the group creating this.
For your support, we thank you.
