You might be wondering why the information about refugee/immigrant events and training in the Communicator recently. Mission Council began to question what it means to “welcome” refugees and immigrants early this year, especially given the national narrative. A combined task group from two Spirit Teams (Giving & Mercy and Faith Sharing) spent several months investigating local resources and Disciples resources. We found that Woodgate Apartments is one of the primary places of refugee relocation…ask anyone who drives past Woodgate on a school morning and they will tell you many refugee mothers have their children lined up to catch school buses!
We dreamed BIG: a new playground…a community garden…ESOL classes. Then reality set in and we decided to follow the recommendation of experts…training first. So immediately following worship on July 9, Debra Lee from Episcopal Migration Ministries will provide a mentor training for those interested in working with and advocating for legal immigrants and refugees. The training includes cultural orientation, healthy boundaries, helping vs. rescuing, mentor etiquette and resources. The training will take about 1.5 hours and will be held in the Grace Room. From there we will expand the conversation about what it means to “welcome” refugees and immigrants.
