At the beginning of December I never would have guessed that my sermons for the month would be on prophets and poets, but they have been that. I thought it might be helpful for those who are interested to recall the names of the poets: Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, and on the 17th, W. H.Auden.I think of these and other poets as some of the prophets of today. I also read from Charles Dickens. It has been a literary month.
December 24th, is our Christmas service at 10:15. This is a combination 4th Sunday in Advent and Christmas Eve worship service. I’ll share a little of my theology of Christmas, we’ll sing Christmas Carols, and might hear some or at least one report from the field depending on circumstances.
December 31 is our Sock It To Me & Pie Sunday. I don’t know that this will become a permanent year-end celebration/ tradition but stranger things have happened. If you have a fun pair of socks that hold memories of the past year, a promise for the new year, or that you just like to wear because they are fun, put ’em and come to church on the 31st. If you have smelly old socks with rotten memories that you just want to burn, please leave those at home. And, if you have a pie to share, bring it along.
In friendship,
David
