FROM OUR INTERIM PASTOR

Recent events caused me to pick up my copy of Rabbi Michael Lerner’s The Politics of Meaning: Restoring Hope in an Age of Cynicism (Addison-Wesley, 1996). Lerner offers the following definition of spirituality: “an awareness of the fundamental unity of all being, and of our connectedness to one another and to the universe” (page 56). He suggests that this spirituality is common to all faith traditions. And, he opines that this spirituality is the opposite of arrogance and egotism. The politics of meaning does not endorse any party or platform. But it does seek to replace political and economic institutions that undermine this spirituality.

This Sunday Natalie Byington will tell her personal story and share how she moved from “anger to action.” We will all have a chance to meet after worship in the Grace Room to share something of our own personal journey, and discuss the pledge of nonviolence.

Given all that is happening in our nation—political stalemates and violence in the schools—I am very thankful for the witness of PVCC.

Blessings, David
