I have been advised that it would be a good idea to explain the symbol of the wedge blade, on our communion table, in partner with the cross. The wedge blade has been a part of Pine Valley worship since Connie and I joined in the early 70’s. It has been the symbol for the EI, Ecumenical Institute, which started in the 60’s. The EI’s mission was and is the renewal of the church to make a difference in the world. The wedge blade represents a way of thinking in the following slogan: The Wedge Blade Of History Is Forged By Those Who Stand Between The No Longer, (behind the blade), And The Not Yet, (in front of the tip) Laying Down Their Lives For the Sake Of All Creation.
During the 70’s, our minister and members of the church attended religious studies in Chicago, to be trained in new ways of theological thinking, to bring back to the congregation. That way of thinking has been the basis for my personal theological position. The blade makes sense if you believe Jesus prompted us to be his followers, rather than his worshippers. Are we admirers or followers of Jesus?
If the Cross is the symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice, what symbol do we have that represents our response to Jesus? For some of us think it’s the Wedge Blade.
What I’ve said so far doesn’t do justice to the subject. More needs to be explained. If I attempt to do it in this one article, you will likely never read anything from me again. If you care to know more read the next Communicator, If, you don’t…Jesus loves you anyway (but don’t tell me). Phil Dietz
