Spring training is over and the new baseball season is underway. The Kansas City Royals are off to a great start and stand at the top of their division. Meanwhile, my Milwaukee Brewers are at the bottom of the heap in their division.
As a child growing up in Wisconsin I went to see the Milwaukee Braves. “Hammerin Hank” was there. His teammate Joe Adcock is quoted as saying, “Trying to sneak a pitch past Hank Aaron is like trying to sneak a sunrise past a rooster.” He was a great player. During his career he broke many barriers and showed incredible courage.
I was thinking about him as I watched the Brewers lose to the Cubs the other night, and as I think back on the Shockers great run in the Final Four.
Even more than basketball, I think of baseball as a game of endless hope. It takes hours to play a single game and the season goes on almost forever. Another reason that I like the game is because of the skill of great players. Mostly, I like it because all you need is a ball, a bat, a glove (it helps), and a friend. Anybody can play.
Peace, David Hansen
