When are your services? Where are your services held? Pine Valley holds its Sunday morning worship in the Great Hall. Our church building was designed with flexibility in mind; everything in The Great Hall can be moved around, or even out. People in worship sit facing each other; it’s nice to see the faces of half of the congregation during worship. The Great Hall is used for worship, fellowship, and congregational meetings, as well as for special meals, church parties, our annual fund raising garage sale and even rentals. We believe it’s not the building or “sanctuary” that is particularly sacred, but rather, it is the gathering of two or more people to worship God that makes a place holy. How long are your services? What should I wear? What are your services like? Our worship is full of music. You’ll enjoy congregational singing, our adult choir, and Epiphany, our praise band. Special vocal and instrumental music is often shared. One of the traditions at Pine Valley is worshipping over a meal. We usually have an Agape Feast to celebrate the start of Pentecost. For our Thanksgiving celebration, we often share a meal with other congregations as part of the service. You’ll enjoy the fellowship of members and visitors before and after the service. Fellowship happens in the church lobby and the Great Hall. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, and even feel free to bring it into worship if you want. How will I be expected to participate during worship? We would like to have you sign our registry, but that’s not required either. Just come, enjoy worship and celebrate God. What about my kids? Children’s moment is offered during the service. Grade school children are welcome to remain in worship. What about Religious Education? Are you part of a denomination? What is your congregation’s mission and vision? Our current Vision Statement is “Caring for All God’s Children.” All of us, regardless of age, are God’s children. Our focus, therefore, is providing attentive care to those who are in need. Specifically, we run the only Birthday Box program in the state of Kansas. In this program, we care for 100 elementary students at two schools in Oaklawn, KS, a relatively poor suburb of Wichita. Our service gives students supplies and gifts to celebrate their birthday, something they may not be able to afford otherwise. We provide a cake mix, frosting and candles. After all, what’s a birthday without birthday cake? We also include games or toys and books to add a little fun well past the birthday party. We often include necessities such as shampoo, toothbrushes, deodorant, new socks and underwear and other items because these are always in need. Our Birthday Box program is funded, in a large part, by a Reconciliation grant from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kansas. Pine Valley presently supports a Mission to Malawi through our friends Kholiwe Mkandawire, her son Sinte, and her sister, Gertrude Mkandawire Mhango. Kholiwe and Gertrude journeyed with us in 2004 and 2005, as Kholiwe escaped from Malawi during political struggles. Today, both are back home in Malawi. Kholiwe continues her work as a veterinary surgeon while Gertrude serves as a member of Parliament. While in Wichita, they found a supportive community in Wichita and at Pine Valley. They learned about Trees for Life and are using information to start their own program of planting trees. “Life with Dignity,” includes providing food and education for pre-school children and orphans, empowerment of women and many other approaches to help all "children" of Malawi. Pine Valley has financially helped with several fund raising efforts and remains in frequent communication with Kholiwe and Gertrude.Back to FAQ-List. |
